The Birniwa Local Government Council in Jigawa has announced that it has planted more than 60,000 assorted tree seedlings in the area as part of its 2025 tree planting campaign.

The information officer of the council, Alhaji Muhammad Musa, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday in Dutse.

The chairman of the council, Shehu Baba, stated that the gesture was intended to combat desert encroachment and other environmental challenges in the area.

He explained that the seedlings were planted in schools, on roadsides, and in other strategic locations across the council, as part of a move to complement the state government’s efforts to protect the environment. The information officer added that the chairman urged the residents to support the initiative by caring for the planted seedlings to maturity.

According to him, Muhammad Aminu, the Head of the Agriculture Department of the council, disclosed that the council had received 62,000 seedlings from the state government for planting.

Musa added that the Special Adviser to Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa on Environment, Garba Ibrahim, highlighted the negative effects of desertification, erosion, and deforestation on the environment.

The aide also urged residents to plant trees at their respective residences and farmlands to prevent the indiscriminate felling of trees and protect the environment.

Namadi, in July, inaugurated the state’s 2025 tree planting campaign, which aims to plant 4.5 million tree seedlings to preserve the ecosystem and mitigate the effects of climate change.

The governor explained that the annual campaign was one of his administration’s commitments to the people to reinvigorate and expand ongoing environmental development and protection programmes.
